The EQU module provides a free-form worksheet for user-defined equations. It allows calculations to be modeled for which no ready-made code module exists: intermediate calculations, company-specific design formulas, unit conversions or supplementary verifications. The user-defined equations are evaluated like regular modules and appear in the calculation documentation with their inputs, formulas and results.

The worksheet unfolds its full potential in combination with the other modules of a project: results from code-based calculations can be reused as input quantities for your own equations – for example, to estimate a weight from a calculated wall thickness, to build cost indicators or to check project-specific additional criteria. A display option controls whether the worksheet is shown on one page or two.

Calculation workflow

  1. Define quantities: First, the required input quantities are created with designation and unit – freely entered values or results taken over from other modules of the project.
  2. Formulate equations: The calculation rules are entered as formulas over the defined quantities. Several equations can build on each other, so multi-step calculations can also be modeled.
  3. Evaluate and check: The worksheet calculates the results immediately upon input. Intermediate results remain visible, so the calculation chain can be followed and validated step by step.
  4. Document: When the project is printed, the user-defined equations appear with their inputs and results at their position in the calculation sequence – on one page or two, as selected – and thus complement the code-based verifications into one coherent set of documentation.

What is the equation worksheet typically used for?

For everything that falls between the code modules: weight estimates from calculated wall thicknesses, conversions between unit systems, interpolation of table values, in-house empirical formulas or additional customer criteria. The advantage over an external spreadsheet is that the calculation stays within the project, can access the module results, and appears in the same documentation as the code-based verifications.

Are user-defined equations part of the code-compliant verification?

No – EQU evaluates the entered formulas but checks neither their technical correctness nor any reference to a code. Responsibility for the formula, its range of validity and unit consistency lies with the user. For documents subject to third-party review, it is advisable to state the source of the formula (code, technical literature, company standard) in the documentation so that an inspector can follow the calculation.
